Certain groups, societies and organisations within the Guild and University itself have been friends and allies of the LGBTQ Association and are quite popular with LGBTQ students, whether or not they are active members of the association or not.

Our members do not have to attend every event we run (although it’s awesome when they do :P ); sexuality does not necessarily define one’s personality and LGBTQ students have unique and diverse lifestyles! We advertise the events of our friends and encourage group outings for – if nothing else – the sake of being friendly and social.

The Guild itself

The Guild occasionally runs large-scale events that the LGBTQ Association takes a vested interest in and gets involved in such as World AIDs Day and SHAG Week. These are advertised on the main events page and at the calendar below.

Friend Groups

The Chaplaincy and Faith Societies

This year, the LGBTQ Association and the University Chaplaincy have established a good working relationship, notably with the Methodist Chaplain, Rev. Kara Cooper, Methodist Society and Anglican Society. This builds on the long-standard good relationship the LGBTQ has had with the Jewish Society with whom we have run successful joint events in the past.

The Chaplaincy/faith societies and LGBTQ often run joint events which are advertised on the main events page, but their events are advertised at the bottom of this page.

RockSoc

The University of Birmingham Rock Society runs events centred around a wide range of rock/alternative music genres and tastes. RockSoc has been historically popular with our “L” and “B” students, who are living proof that dance music is not the live love of every LGBTQ person. ;)

RockSoc hold an annual Rocky Horror Show event jointly with the LGBTQ Association, which usually takes place in term 2. More information to come on the main events page. RockSoc’s own events – coach-outings, pub nights, band nights etc. – are shown on the calendar below (if interested in going to one, often a plan to message Kai or Matt and arrange a group gathering!

MetalSoc and BandSoc

As with RockSoc, a lot of our LGBTQ students share an interest in the various genres of metal music and/or play an instrument or in a band themselves.

MetalSoc, like RockSoc, run events centred around musical genres but focus on the various sub-genres of metal music and often run events in conjunction with RockSoc.

BandSoc are dedicated to the progression of young musicians at the University of Birmingham and is quite popular with LGBTQ students.

FetSoc

The idea behind the Fettish Society is to provide a safe, no-pressure environment in which members may express their fetishes, be around like minded people, to provide education on fetish and BDSM practices, and most importantly to ensure and promote safety.

Again, LGBTQ students may find the society appeals; check out their Facebook group for more information.
