The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer Association at the University of Birmingham is a collective of students.
We exist to…
campaign for a fair and safe education and society for all of our members
provide a welcoming environment which supports our peers
organise events for our members
Who we are is really – you! You volunteer to be our activists, our Committee and our Convenor. And you are always our members, the ones who set our priorities by participating in our democracy and who keep us energised by attending our events and having fun.
Unlike most Guild of Students student groups, there is no charge at all for being a member of the LGBTQ. Just be self-defining as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or queer student, you have absolute right to be an active member of our Association.
Name: Emma Cooper
Age: 19 Studying: BA English and American Literature,
2nd year
Role on committee: LGBTQ Officer
Hi, I\'m Emma, the LGBTQ Officer this year.
I\'m outgoing, friendly and very easy to talk to, and I\'m passionate about what I do. I\'m going into my 2nd year of a degree in English and American Literature, which I adore, so you\'ll probably either see me doing things for the LGBTQ, with my head buried in a book in the Mason lounge, in the pub or out clubbing.
My job is to work with the Guild and the University to support LGBTQ students, as well as being involved in the Association.
If you have any questions feel free to come and have a chat as I\'m around at almost all of the LGBTQ events, or feel free to email me.
The mandate of the LGBTQ Officer is to promote the interests of lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer students, supported by the Guild and University in working towards the social and academic equality of all students.
The LGBTQ Officer is part of the Guild Executive Officer group and elected every year by cross campus ballot.
The chairperson's role is to motivate and organise LGBTQ students and volunteers to achieve the aims of the Association, and use the skills and resources available to make the LGBTQ an effective representative Association.
The Treasure's job is to plan the use of the Association’s resources appropriately so that Members and participants can get the most out of the Association’s campaigns and events.
The Secretary's job is to ensure that the LGBTQ Committee is democratically supported so that Members understand what the Committee is doing and can effectively communicate with the Committee.
The Information, Communication and Press officer is responsible for managing all online and advertising assets of the Association to ensure maximum communication between the Committee and LGBTQ students.
The Guild Councillors\' mandate is to represent LGBTQ students to the decision makers of the Guild of Students and further the Association’s priorities and objectives through Union democracy.
The role of an Open Place member of the committee is to find new and exciting ways to engage LGBTQ students so that the Committee can represent them properly and, in doing so, achieve the Association’s objectives.
